Well, I know that you might stumble upon this blog while searching on Google so that you will get a clue about what’s everyone else talking about. What do they really mean “selling on Facebook”, because I’ve been as confused as you were when I first started my business and all my friends told me that they got more customers on Facebook than any other channels.
So how exactly could you start selling things on Facebook? Well, there are 2 ways and PLACES on Facebook that will kick start your revenue.
Sell on Facebook Page Shop
During the pandemic, Facebook has announced the launch of Facebook Shop to support small businesses. This update has given the way for a complete social commerce experience since the usage of social media as well as e-commerce has gone up exponentially during the pandemic.
What is a Facebook Page Shop
Facebook Page Shop is a tab in your Facebook Page where your customers could browse through, buy, and pay for the product directly on Facebook. Below is an example of a Facebook Shop.
With this Facebook Page Shop tab, your customer could choose to check out by either messaging you to arrange payment or proceed payment externally on your website.
Create your Facebook Shop.
First, you want to make sure that the “Shop” tab is set up for your Facebook page because it’s not a default tab for every page.
Adding Shop tab/section to your Facebook Page
Go to Setting>Template and Tabs>Add a tab and choose “Shop” and click add a tab. After clicking, a popup will appear for you to choose the checkout method for Shop.
Now you can select a “Message my page on Messenger” to arrange customers’ payment or “Check out in your website” where your customers can proceed payment on your website.
A really IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind is that you could not change this later so be mindful about it (unless you want to go through a delete it all and recreate your catalog again!!!).
Create a product feed for your Facebook Shop.
After this step, there are 2 ways to start selling your products on Facebook
- Manually create a product list by adding each product detail on Facebook itself, this way require a lot of effort and time if you have a big store of many products
- Sync your products from an e-commerce store to Facebook Page Shop with a product feed optimizer tool.
With the first way, you just need to click add product and then fill in all information needed. I won’t go over step by step as Facebook did a good job doing this.
I highly recommend the second way since it’s much easy and effective if you have hundreds to thousands of products, furthermore, it will sync automatically every time you update a new product in your store.
There are several e-commerce store builders out there where you could easily create a store without coding knowledge such as Shopify, Big Commerce or Woo Commerce. You could find my guideline to create your store on these platforms below
Step 1: Build a store on Shopify, Woo-commerce, and more
It’s quite simple to create an e-commerce store nowadays. You can just simply follow the steps that Shopify or Woo Commerce show you.

Step 2: Sync products from Shopify to Facebook Page Shop
So in order to do sync your product to Facebook Page Shop, you do have to sycn them to Facebook Catalog Manager, which is a place where you can manage all your products. Follow the steps below:
Optimize and Sync products to Facebook Catalog
Step 1: Sync products from Shopify to Facebook Catalog with Socialshop
Socialshop is one of the easy and user-friendly tools that build for shop owners to set it once and then forget about it (FOR REAL)
You could Install Socialshop for free here.
After installing the app, you just need to sync your product feeds to Facebook Catalog Manager. This means the products will be automatically updated in your Facebook Page Shop tab.
However, you need to make sure that you are the admin of both Facebook Business Account, Facebook Page, and Facebook Catalog Manager account to sync up the products.
Step 2: Optimize your Facebook Product feeds
While syncing your products, you could also use its “Mapping” features to optimize your product feeds.
For example: Since I use the same product name for “summer dress floral”, it will appear to be exactly the same product name, but if I combine 2 variants “Product name” and “Variant name” (which I set to be color) it will distingue my product and appear to be more attractive.
When the synchronization finishes, all products will be updated in your Facebook Catalog Manager and later in your Facebook Page Shop. However, it is worth checking since if you have multiple pages, you would want to make sure it connected to the right one.
After 5 minutes, all my products were synced to Facebook Catalog and later on to my Facebook Page Shop.
It’s a long process I know, but after first setting up, you don’t have to even bother to upload every single product to your Facebook Shop or sync up new products, the tool does it all for you.
Customize your store
Once you finish adding and syncing all products, you shall start to customize your store by adding store descriptions. Like most of the other descriptions on Facebook, there’s a limit in length with only 200 characters long, therefore, make every word count!
You can further make your shop stand out by adding collections and feature them in the page shop to get more traffic for the products that you want to promote.
Click on the gear icon > Manage shop.
On the left menu bar under “Shop” section > Collections, click “Add collection” to group your products.
From this step, it depends on how you want to categorize your products or you can simply stick to the collections that you already grouped on your website.
For example, I have 2 collections, one is shoes and another is summer dresses. However, I also have a “Summer Sales” collection, where I want to add products for sales so I created one and select them as a featured collection on my Facebook page. This way, I could get my sales campaign exposed to more customers that visit the shop page.
Now you can go ahead and promote your shops by creating ads or share your product’s collection on your page…
Sync product from Big Commerce and Woo Commerce to Facebook Page Shop.
Similarly to Shopify, you just need to install an app to sync up your store, I recommend you to download BigCommerce’s Facebook Shop app, which will walk you through the process of syncing the store. After sync all your products, you could repeat the steps above to customize your Facebook Page Shop.
Sell on Facebook Shop/Facebook Store
So this Facebook Shop is a storefront shopping interface in your Facebook Page, however, it’s not available for all pages yet. To be able to create a Facebook Shop you have to:
- Already have a Facebook Shop Page
- Get the invitation by Facebook through an email (only available in the US)
You could actively contact them through an interest form here
So if Facebook Shop is available for you. Here is the step by step guideline to create one.
Setup Commerce manager
Start creating a commerce manager account here or if you do have one already, you could simply skip these steps
Click “start selling” and continue through Facebook instruction on your screen.
Next, there will be 2 options for you, one is through e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Woo Commerce, Big Commerce…the other is setting up through Commerce Manager.
According to the latest Shopify x Facebook Partnership announcement, they will be releasing the Facebook Shop function very soon, however, at this point, it’s only available for Instagram Shop.
So go ahead and choose “Set up on Commerce Manager” as if when you read this the function is not available for you yet.
Facebook Shop Requirement
Since the feature was only launched in the US first, you are required to give your US bank details, Tax, and payment info as well as Shop policy. If your business is not in the US, don’t worry, you can fill the interest form and get informed if they update the feature for you as mentioned above.
Another option is to stick with Facebook Page Shop until the roll out Facebook Shop for you.
Click “Next” and follow all steps below
Create a Commerce Manager Account
To start a shop you will be walked through some setup steps from Facebook.
First, you will need to fill in some business information such as the store name, the Facebook page that you want to link your Commerce Manager to (choose the existing page, or create a new one). Keep in mind that you need to also have a Business Manager account to set this up.
Next, click “get started” to add your products and shipping options as well as service information. Since these steps are quite clearly guided by Facebook, I won’t give too much detail, just follow the instruction on screen.
Optimize your product collection
Phewwwww! Finally, we’ve come to the less complicated and more fun part.
All you need to do is to categorize your products into different collections so that it appears to be more compelling and store-like on Facebook Shop.
The easiest way to do this is to log in back to your Commerce Manager and click “Create collections”.
You will then need to fill in the collection name, collection description, and upload a cover media. I would suggest you to mindfully design a cover photo that represents the collections with some of the best selling products as well as some texts that attract the audience’s attention.
Once you are done with optimizing your collection you can move in the next step – personalize your store.
Personalize your store
One of the best parts of Facebook Shop is that it allows you to personalize your storefront, so go ahead and be creative as well as make sure it aligns with your brand image. To start editing your store, go back to Commerce Manager, click “Shops”, and on the shop, you want to customize, click “edit”. There are 2 tabs:
Layout – this is where you can choose to display collections as featured and add in carousels of other collections.
Style – this is where you can adjust colors, button size, and text to align the storefront with your branding.
Publish your Facebook Shop
Click “preview” to make sure if your Shop looks exactly the way you want, once you are happy with the result, click “Publish” to starting selling products on your Facebook Shop.
Wait! How about Facebook Market Place? It’s a totally different thing because it’s designed for C2C where people can post and sell things individually so it’s more customer-driven rather than a business commerce experience.
Therefore if you want to start selling things on Facebook, Facebook Page Shop and Facebook Shop are 2 options for you.
More importantly, since the Facebook Shop is not widely available for all pages yet and only limits to the US market, you can now set up a Facebook Page Shop section on your own page and wait for it to roll out. Create a Facebook Page Shop is way easier and faster if you use some of the feed optimizing tools and you will anyway need a Facebook page shop to create a Facebook Shop.
